A plant or animal species disappears every 20 minutes worldwide. That's over 26,000 species a year. Far fewer are being discovered, and by cross-referencing information, it seems likely that some species are disappearing before they have even been recorded. In Yasuni National Park, the territory of the Kichwa and Huaorani peoples, the team carried out a biodiversity inventory in the following categories:
-herpetology (reptiles & amphibians) with Damien Lecouvey (herpetologist and expedition leader), Matthieu Berroneau (herpetologist) and Vincent Prémel (herpetologist)
-ornithology with Thibaut Rivière (ornithologist)
In one of the 19 "megadiversity" zones, oil expansion is growing exponentially year by year. The ITT block on the edge of the park continues its massive advance. The study also aims to quantify the impact of oil expansion in the heart of the national park.
The team is made up of French scientists, a logistics team and members of the Kichwa community from the village of Mandari Panga, as well as professors and students from the University of Ikiam (Ecuador), who took DNA samples. The project is the 2023 winner of the Fondation Iris and Société des Explorateurs Français awards.
